About Angelita Peterson

Angelita Peterson is a self-taught visual artist. She was born on Saba, Dutch Caribbean where she has actively been painting in her free time since the summer of 2008.

Angelita is known for her vibrant and expressive works that often explore themes of identity, culture, and the human experience. Her love for the Caribbean is evident in her choice of subjects such as flora & fauna and underwater themes. Her developing artistic style envelopes the variety of her experiences and pays homage to her adage that “life is a catalyst for the creative process”. She is also interested in symbolism and explores the themes through her paintings like that of the Amazon lily in “Color Blind 2023”.

Her artistic practice spans various mediums like oils and mixed media; however, she works mainly with watercolors because of its spontaneous and translucent properties, allowing her to convey complex emotions and narratives through her art.

Peterson’s work frequently draws inspiration from her personal experiences and cultural background, reflecting her unique perspective on societal issues. She employs bold colors and dynamic compositions to create visually striking pieces of art that engage viewers and provoke thought. Her favorite styles of art are surrealism, abstract expressionism and visionary art.

In addition to her studio practice, Peterson is involved in community-based art initiatives, where she collaborates with local organizations to promote art education and accessibility. Her commitment to fostering creativity within her community shows her belief in the transformative power of art.

She has had the honor of exhibiting to the Dutch Royal Family during group exhibitions on the island of Saba. She has also exhibited regionally in St. Barts and attended Plein Air Curaçao International Art festival in 2019. Her artwork can be found in collections in the U.S.A., The Netherlands, Sint Maarten, St. Eustatius and in local Saban art collections.

She has attended University of Massachusetts Amherst as a junior undergraduate student and is currently taking a break from her studies to pursue art projects but hopes to continue her studies in the future, leading her in the direction of the arts.

Angelita Peterson stands out as a significant figure in the contemporary art world with a growing body of work that resonates with diverse audiences and contributes to ongoing conversations about identity and representation in the art world.
